Motion and color . . . the ideal of Henri Matisse.
Matisse… a French artist… a visionary born in 1869. His simple lines and saturated colors created new worlds on canvas and in sculpture for generations to come. Matisse considered himself a medium, constantly challenging his instincts, living forever to paint, as he says, “purity and serenity” for himself and worldwide audiences.
Called the “wild beast” for his daring use of distorted images and vivid palette, Matisse composed an expressive language that infiltrated the worlds of fashion, design, and dance.
Dance Theatre of Greenville’s newest full-length production Henri, is a collaboration of contemporary works from resident and guest choreographers that are inspired by the works of Henri Matisse. Each choreographic work presented draws inspiration from Matisse’s artistic expression and his ability to capture the pure essence of form and color. From “Open Window” to “Woman with a Hat”, to the depiction of Matisse himself, Henri will captivate the audience, leaving them with a rewarding, enriching and truly unique artistic experience.

Our Inaugural Performance . . .
For its inaugural performance, Dance Theatre of Greenville presents THEMIS, which explores the rich history of balancing the scales. Her blindfold in tact and sword at the ready, the goddess emits the grace and strength of divine law, order, and fairness.
