For the first time at Equinox Dance Festival, we will welcome an artist-in-residence! This new program will include more ways to interact and learn from professional dancers outside of South Carolina.
As our pilot year, Decent Dance will set a new piece on the DTG Performance Company, perform in the showcase, teach master classes during the festival, and sit on a panel about careers in dance.
Tony Guglietti received his BFA from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Upon graduation, he became a founding member of Sean Curran Company and toured across the globe. Kristin Wagner hasn’t done any of that, but she manages to work through her inferiority complex in rehearsal just fine. Together as Decent Dance, the pair creates accessible contemporary performance works that dabble in comedy, dramedy, and all things silly, sweet and true. The duet’s collaborative creative process relies on a foundation of sharing space and weight, balancing impulse and input, the occasional lovers’ quarrel, and Cheez-Its®. Tony and Kristin take great joy in teaching composition and expression through a contemporary dance lens to students of all ages, and have taught at the Dance Theatre of Greenville (SC), Free Form Dance Academy (MA), New England Conservatory (MA) and The Dance Complex (MA). Decent Dance has presented work in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine, at The Dance Complex, the Boston Center for the Arts, AS220, and the Maine International Dance Festival. Their favorite performance to date was their wedding in September 2022 at the cutest little flower farm you ever did see in Barre, MA. In late 2023, Decent Dance welcomed Nico Guglietti to the company after a lengthy audition process. He made his stage debut in June 2024, at six months old. Described by Dance Informa as “grace with power,” Alexandria Nunweiler forges community by uncovering true stories -- whether that be in the classroom, on stage, or on the yoga mat. Her choreographic work draws the fine line between darkness and humor as it dives deeply into ethnography and collaborative reflection as means for creation. As a performer, Alexandria works within The Click as a founding member in projects for stage, screen, and augmented reality app, as well as devising her first evening-length work Edge of Aquarius that premiered in January 2024. She creates duet stage work and co-heads a curation series with Ashlea Sovetts, a collaboration that spans the east coast and has dipped into international work in Italy. Recently, Alexandria has performed in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival (2021), DanceNOW Boston (2022), and BOOM Charlotte (2022), among others. A lifelong learner, she holds her BA in Dance from Winthrop University (2014), MSc from Hult International Business School (2017), 200-hour RYT from Jenny Lane Yoga (2021) and spent the summer studying at ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival (2022) in Vienna, Austria. She is currently an adjunct professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Director for Artistic Planning and Development at her home studio Dance Theatre of Greenville (South Carolina). About the student choreography program...
Through a guided application process, young choreographers ages 15+ can submit materials to be considered for the program. Student choreographers hold rehearsals at DTG, are mentored by DTG faculty and Equinox guest artists, have the opportunity to present their piece on the Equinox stage, and receive structured feedback on their works. Student choreographers can expect to learn more about choreographic devices to create effective dance, how to lead a rehearsal of their peers, and how to write about their process, artistic vision, and themselves as artists. The choreographers typically have 8 weeks to bring their visions to life on the Equinox stage.
About the student choreography showcase...
Equinox student choreographers present their works in a one night only show in the blackbox at Greenville Technical Charter High School. They will work with a lighting and sound designer to get their piece stage ready as well as participate in a Q+A session with the audience after the show.
Please note applications are closed for the student choreography program at this time. They will reopen in May 2025.
